FAQs

Helpful information before you get started

How long will the evaluation take?

We conduct the evaluation over multiple sessions ranging from four to six total meetings; this estimate includes an initial intake appointment, two to four testing appointments, and a final feedback session. Each session lasts anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours. During the feedback session, we review all of the test results with you and also make recommendations based on our findings. If the evaluation resulted in a diagnosis, you will be informed of it at the feedback appointment. Some evaluations may require more than six sessions, depending on the attention and concentration of the individual being tested and on the complexity of the presenting problems.

How do I know if I need an evaluation?

Not every problem requires a psychological evaluation. For example, if you noticed that you are having difficulty concentrating, but this problem has only been affecting you for a short period of time, you may not need a comprehensive evaluation. But if you or your child has been struggling either at home, at work, or at school for several months and you've tried strategies that aren't working, a psychological evaluation may be helpful in understanding what the problem is and what you can do about it. Many parents seek out our services even after their children have been evaluated by the school system because they still don't understand why their children are struggling or what can be done to help them. If you're not sure whether or not you need an evaluation, we offer free phone consultations to help you figure out whether our services are a good fit for your current needs.

Is therapy right for me?

For all of us, there are times in life when we feel overwhelmed with daily tasks or relationship issues.  Perhaps you do not feel as happy or as accomplished as you believe you should in your personal life or in a relationship.   While you may have successfully overcome small challenges in the past, we encourage you to seek out extra support when something becomes overwhelming or you feel more tired, irritable, nervous, or upset than usual.  During such times, you may benefit from a space where you can confidentially explore your thoughts, express what is happening, and find solutions.  Therapy can offer long-lasting benefits to help overcome the challenges you encounter in all aspects of your life.

What is included in the evaluation?

The evaluation includes everything necessary to answer the referral question and a final report documenting all of the findings and the diagnosis if any. This includes collection of background information, all testing materials, all test sessions, and a final feedback session. We may interview other individuals such as your child's teacher with regard to the referral question, with your permission, and these interviews are also included. In addition, the evaluation includes a comprehensive report that contains all of the relevant information gathered from interviews and formal tests.

Does your practice accept insurance?

Typically, insurance companies do not cover evaluations that are conducted for the purpose of identifying learning disabilities. When covered, insurance companies severely limit the number of hours that can be dedicated to the evaluation. Because we believe in evidence-based assessment that often extends beyond what is approved by insurance, we do not participate in insurance panels. We will provide an itemized invoice at the conclusion of the evaluation process that can be submitted for clients who have “out of network” coverage for mental health services.
